In History, our Year 1 students are learning about ‘Past and Present Family Life’ with a focus on the similarities and differences in modern family life to past generations. In Week 5 we took an exciting step back in time to 1892 and visited the Urrbrae House Museum to experience life as young ladies and gentlemen in the two-storey family home of Peter and Matilda Waite. This historic home is part of the Waite Historic Precinct – consisting of over 100 hectares of land donated by the Waite family estate to the University of Adelaide to establish an agricultural education and research centre, high school, arboretum and public park. Students enthusiastically engaged in a range of learning experiences guided by museum staff and volunteers in period costumes to explore domestic artefacts and experience the operation of the house through the eyes of Peter and Matilda’s family and their employees. Children used nib pens and ink, made cards with pressed flowers and paper cuttings, explored the library and billard room, visited Miss Eva’s bedroom and enjoyed morning tea served in the dining room.
