The Year 2 students in Room 17 have been engaging in an in depth study of narrative writing this semester. We have learned about simple and compound sentence structure, and how a good author is very selective with their choice of verbs and imaginative detail in order to engage their reader. Students are now using their understanding of narrative composition, descriptive language and sentence structure to create their own entertaining stories!

Students began by brainstorming a creative idea with a particular focus on character and setting, and created an illustration to capture the essence of their story. Next they used a story planner to elaborate on their idea, and expand on the problem and resolution. Each lesson has focused on a particular part of their story to slow down the writing process and allow each child the opportunity to reflect on their writing.

We plan to display our stories in the school library once the children have published them so stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s a taste of some of the students’ introductions. I’m sure you’d agree some of them are a little scary!
