Hahndorf is a historic town located in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. A short proximity to Adelaide, Room 19 and 20 were fortunate to visit this fun destination for a day filled with learning and adventure. We strolled the tree-lined main street where we were enticed by the delicious scent of traditional German fare while tasting the extravagant treats in the Fruchoc and Humbugs lolly shops.

Steeped in history, we went on an exploration of the main street of Hahndorf with our tour guide, Sharon, learning about the region’s original inhabitants, the Peramangk Aboriginal people. We then learned about the German history of Hahndorf which can be traced back to 1838 when George Fife Angas made a trip to London to promote colonisation. We discovered that 38 Prussian families first arrived in Hahndorf on foot, escaping persecution by the King of Prussia.

We were fascinated to discover that Hahndorf was named after Captain Dirk Meinertz Hahn and ‘dorf’ means town or village. Our excursion ended with lunch in the Pioneer Memorial Park where we tasted some traditional German fare, a pretzel! We loved our time in Hahndorf and can’t wait to go back another day.
