There was plenty of excitement as the students entered the library during Book Week. The library had been transformed into old worlds, new worlds and other worlds, and looked amazing!

Phil Cummings was the special guest author who shared many humorous stories, songs and childhood memories. Phil’s writing tips were useful and will definitely come in handy. He showed us his note book of character, setting and story ideas and even a vomit bag he’d written on in a plane to record a story idea!

One minute we were roaring with laughter at Phil’s funny voices and stories about his life, and next we were sad as he spoke about the death of his cousin Paul and his faithful dogs. Many of Phil’s books are based on his life experiences and his audible book series, “Me and Neal” is absolutely hilarious. Phil was funny, helpful and very entertaining. We loved every moment of his visit and we hope we can see him again.

Comments from Room 20:

  • My favourite book was ‘Boy’ because I love the powerful story that his cousin was deaf and that he passed away and Phil Cummings wrote a story about him. Emerson Kidd
  • I found out that he doesn’t just make one copy of a book. He actually. Makes about 15-20 copies in total. Clovis Wong
  • I learnt that Phil Cummings was a mechanic and a teacher before he was an author. Lucas Porcaro
  • My favourite story was ‘Joe and the Stars’. It was about a boy who didn’t know what to do after moving to the city where he couldn’t see the sars at night. Sarah Papay
  • I learnt that you can write so many interesting sentences by using adjectives and adverbs. An example he gave us was ‘I rode my bike down the hill’. This sentence is not very interesting. You could include how you write the bike, then describe the bike and write what the hill looked like. That is how authors write. Aqeela Budiarso
