Literacy has been a particular focal point for our school over the past few years, with a spotlight on writing and spelling. We are proud of the work we have done in this area and look forward to continuing this priority, building on our successes across the school.

In 2021, we also turn our major focus to mathematics. We commenced this year, prior to students coming back to school, by  inviting Peter Sullivan (not remotely connected – genealogically or mathematically) from Monash University to spend a day with all of our staff. Peter was the lead writer of the  Australian Mathematics Curriculum which describes the learning expectations for all students Reception to Year 10 across the country. We are aiming for every student at Unley PS to do their very best, to improve and to enjoy problem solving activities that are challenging and rewarding. What know that when students are not afraid of making a mistake, they will readily engage in their learning. Many students use the phrase “being in the pit” to describe the struggle of uncertainty when working on a maths problem. This is something that we encourage – both at school and at home. Be prepared to talk with your children this year about their maths learning, and to support their learning through many practical, home-spun problems involving cooking, building, gardening and lots more.

We will be sharing more about our maths journey soon – from your child’s class teachers and from our newly appointed teacher leaders and coordinators, Morgan Knight and Lauren Pask (picture above).
