This fortnight’s writing challenge was created by two Year 5 students, Ella McCurdie and Abbie Lee. Both Ella and Abbie are avid readers and writers who enjoy completing the regular writing activities posted on Unley Primary School News.

Ella and Abbie challenge you to write a description or short story about being the ruler of an underwater world. Rather than write a whole story, you may prefer to just write a paragraph or two to describe the setting. You can use this picture as inspiration, or you can create your own world using your imagination! Here is an example from Ella, with the beginning paragraphs of her description. Thank you and well done, Ella!

My Underwater World

Written by Ella McCurdie

As I swim through my underwater world, beautiful mermaids curtsy to honour their queen. My underwater world is full of kind mermaids and mermen. Some are pink, some are blue, some are rainbow, some are scaly, some are shiny and some are tough.

The bright, colourful coral, dancing effortlessly with the waves, can be seen from miles away. In the underwater gardening centre, they grow garden beds of kelp, red algae, seagrass, coral and sargassum.

It is fun to watch the dolphins perform prodigious tricks while cooking dinner! Instead of having a dog as a pet, each family looks after a turtle or seahorse. Like a flock of birds, schools of fish fly through the world, barely missing the humongous skyscrapers that light up the city.
