At some schools, playing soccer on the oval is the main cause of arguments between students and can generally lead to trouble. At UPS, you may have even heard some of this yourself! Well, we are happy to say that we have found a solution to this problem! On the Campus 1 oval, we have long had a system for who should use the space at lunch play time, and this has led to the resolution of arguments that might arise about who was on when. The Year 6s and 7s have noticed that this system has eradicated about 95% of the disagreements at lunch.

Unfortunately, some groups of students were still having difficulties getting along while playing soccer on the Campus 2 pitch. Thanks to the intuition of the Student Representative Council, and with Peter’s help, we have been able to acquire two new large soccer goals for Campus 2. This led to increased popularity of this space so the SRC decided to put in a similar roster system on Campus 2.

Jack Appleton and Ben Bevan, two incredibly responsible Year 7 students and great sports, visited the Campus 2 classes to explain the system, and at the same time, to ask how things were going. Jack and Ben were also involved in a mentoring discussion with the middle primary students, where they talked about what it means to be a good sport and how to get the most out of playing games with your mates at school break times. After these initiatives, the Year 3s, 4s and 5s all said the same as what the Year 6s and 7s said: things had dramatically improved! This means that we can now all enjoy soccer at lunch for the amazing game it is!

We would like to extend our thanks to Peter and the SRC for organising the new goals and helping us work out a system to set everyone up for success at lunchtime.
