Thanks to Jack in Year 3 who has submitted a review of the game Triominos to our Family Maths Fun series. Not only does this game supports students’ mental computation and strategic thinking skills, it is also a lot of fun! Thank you and well done, Jack.

TRIOMINOS

Set Up:

Each player (3-4 players) take 7 tiles. If you only have 2 players, each takes 9 tiles. You need a piece of paper and a pen to keep score.

Summary:

In Triominos the aim of the game is to score as many points as you can by using the triangular tiles to match the numbers on the tiles next to them.

When it is your turn you place one of your tiles next to one of the tiles that has already been put there. The numbers on the tile you use must match the numbers on the tile it is touching. You add up the numbers on the tile you have used to make your score for your go.

If you can’t go, you must pick another tile from the stash and keep picking until one of the tiles can be joined onto the grid of tiles.

What I Like About It:

  • You can make as many sums as you want
  • I like adding the scores to see who is in the lead
  • It is fun working out how to fit the tiles
  • You can get bonus scores for completing a hexagon or a bridge

What in it is Challenging?

  • The game can go on a long time if you follow the rules for how to end the game. However, you can decide on a target point at which you can stop the game.
  • The scoring system for the end of a game is quite complicated. But you can simplify it if you want.

Recommendations:

I recommend this game for ages 7+. Older players can follow all the scoring rules to make it more challenging.

Conclusion:

If you do not have this game it is easy to make: you just need a pen, cardboard and scissors. Remember the tiles are triangle-shaped. I hope you like this game if you play it.
