This term, our students have been diving into the art of sentence expansion using our mentor texts ‘The Stone Lion’ by Margaret Wild and ‘Come Down Cat’ by Sonia Hartnett. By focusing on nouns, verbs, and enriching our sentences with adjectives, we’ve been able to add depth and detail to our writing. Through engaging picture prompts and simple noun-verb sentences, students are exploring how to enhance their writing by incorporating elements like when, where, how, and why. This skill makes our texts more interesting and also helps paint vivid pictures for our readers.
Our approach involves following a model, co-constructing sentences through explicit instruction and discussion, and then applying this learning independently. We’ve also transferred these skills into other reflective areas, such as recounting our swimming experiences. Enjoy the images showcasing a range of writing activities the students have been participating in.
