Remembrance Day is held on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year to honour the armed force members who served and were injured or lost their lives in all wars that have passed. This day marks the time where an agreement was made to end the fighting of the First World War in 1918.

Last Saturday, a group of Unley Primary School students attended the 11am Remembrance Day service, at Unley Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens.

To begin, the priest spoke to the crowd who had gathered for the service, asking them to remember those who died or suffered while serving in wars. The moving service included songs and prayers and the striking bugle playing. The Australian flag was soon raised, followed by a minute of silence, as is Remembrance Day custom.

The heartfelt poem, ‘In Flanders Field’ was beautifully read by UPS Year 5 student, Isla Cross, shortly followed by the laying of wreaths. Our Unley Primary School wreath was decorated by Winnie Stewart and Isla Cross. It was filled with incredible bright red poppies made by Liyana Monsur. We left in silence, grateful for the freedom we have been given for those who fought for our country.

Thank you to the students who came to represent our school and lay the wreath at the school’s memorial and to their families for supporting them to be involved.
