‘EXPLORING PAST & PRESENT FAMILY LIFE’ with Room 6

In History our Year 1 students are learning about the similarities and differences in family life while exploring the links and changes that occur over time through a range of engaging learning experiences.

We took an exciting step back in time at the Ayers House Museum exploring the grand old home and experiencing life as an employee of Sir Henry Ayers. We worked with old tools and equipment in the kitchen, we worked as cleaners polishing furniture, we worked as butlers carrying service trays and we worked in the nursery caring for babies and children.

The State Library of SA dropped in with ‘A Playful Past’ digital visit where we explored the history of play and the benefits of play for all. We investigated images of old toys and decided what was different and what was the same. Finally we met ‘Keefy the Koala’ a treasured artefact of the library who inspired great questioning and discussion. It was a thought provoking session for the students and interesting to explore a new format of learning.

Students were invited to share a ‘mystery artefact’ from their families. We contemplated what the objects are, what the objects were used for, wrote descriptions and posed questions about the objects.
