In Room 23 we have been learning different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. This week we had the following problem:

Rose – I like to use the bar model because it is a visual tool. If you have the problem 24÷6 you put the 24 up the top and draw six little boxes underneath.  The number in each box must be the same, and it would be 6 in each box, so 24÷4=6.

Georgie – I used a number line.  I started at zero and I jumped by 4 which was 4, I added another 4 which was 8 and I did this until I reached 24. I worked out that 6×4=24.

Oli – I used counters, and I put them into equal groups. I started with two groups of 12. Then I made groups of 4 and there were 6 counters in each group. 24÷2=12, 24÷4=6.

Zara E – I used the halving strategy.  When I had 24, I halved it to make 12.  I halved it again to make 6. You can halve it once more to make 3.

I worked out that 24÷2=12,  24÷4=6 and 24÷3=8. I then knew the family fact so other answers could be 24÷12=2 , 24÷6=4 and 24÷8=3.

Lola – I drew trees and I put 4 apples on each tree. I did the sum 4 + 4, and then I used repeated addition until I reached 24.

Charlie – I use counters. I put them into equal rows. This is called an array.

Evgenia – Let’s say the problem is 10÷5.  I work out how many 5s are in 10 and the answer is 2.  With 24, I could find out how many 12s are in 24.  The answer is 2.
