Last week Backflips Against Bullying visited Unley Primary School. At Backflips against Bullying, we learnt different ways to recognise and report bullying. They taught us that we have the power to change and be an ‘upstander,’ whether this is by saying something to the person being mean, or telling a trusted adult. There were many examples in the performance where they showed us the importance of standing up for people who are getting bullied, and they also acted it out for us. They let students join them on the stage as well as one of the teachers, Mr Humphries.

The actors also had special talents – backflipping and cool handstands. We had a special chant which was ‘bullying doesn’t make you tough’. There was a part in the performance where the actors were serious and talked about how bullying could change someone’s life and that bullying isn’t ok. Bullying is more than being mean on purpose.

‘Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert)….”

Together we can make a difference!
