Last week we celebrated book week in style and with great enthusiasm at UPS!

The theme of book week, “Dreaming with eyes open” immediately challenged us all to think of ….

When and how do we dream of eyes open?..and

What exactly is a dream?…..

The Library

The library vibrantly reflected the different ways of dreaming and the way our world needs us to dream.

Australia Dreaming

Dream with Nature and dream with Vision for our country.

My Dreaming

ALWAYS Dream Big for self. We learnt that bravery is proportional to the size of the dream.

Dream BIG and be BRAVE.

Global Dreaming

Our students are part of a global community, in rapidly changing world where technological advances and social issues demand the attention from the leaders of tomorrow…our students.

Class Lessons

I was fortunate to be able to visit all classes over the course of the week and speak to them and challenge them about their dreams.

The main message of these lessons was that to dream with eyes open is to look at what is, and then ask….

What could be different?

What could I do to make it better?

Receptions

The receptions dreamt up their own bird to add to our Australian bush scene in the library. All the birds were completely unique and fabulous sharing was shown at craft tables.

Year 1

After reading “Jetty Jumping”, the year 1’s made themselves ready to bravely dive into a big dream.

Year 2

The year 2’s shared their dreams and made colourful dreamcatchers.

Year 3

After reading “The Whales went Walking”, the year 3’s dreamt up their own fantastic creature to bravely walk in a new setting.

Year 4 to 6

We used the power and challenge of the text “The Inheritance” as a stimulus to write poetry. A Shadorma is a poem of 6 lines with a set number of syllables in each line. The children were invited to write on a topic of importance to them and did a wonderful job!

Uncle Tamaru

We were fortunate enough to have Uncle Tamaru, a respected Kaurna elder, visit us to share about Indigenous culture, language and history during book week. He has a passion for teaching “to walk” alongside one another, with a vision for a unified tomorrow and the children learnt much.

Rainbow Serpent

The Rainbow Serpent in Kaurna is the symbol for protection. In the weeks leading up to book week, students were able to paint as part of lunchtime activities in the library. These were collated and made into a huge Rainbow Serpent that now wraps itself the walls of the library.

Book Week Parade

The effort and enthusiasm of almost all students in participating in dressing up for book week was breathtaking. Such variety and creativity. Rain halted a parade outdoors but spirits were not dampened as each class has a turn to proudly showcase their character. A most enjoyable morning for all! Thank you to all parents for assisting your children with their incredible costumes.

Book Week is a memorable celebration of all that authors and illustrators bring into the lives of the reader….the dreamer….and the big, brave dreams that make up the tomorrows of our students here at UPS!
