On Friday the 29th of November, the highly anticipated ‘Staff vs Year 7’ netball game took place, bringing huge crowds to Campus 1 to support and cheer on their respective team.

Before the match, we had time to chat with some of the players. When Mr. Cleggett was questioned if he would go easy on the kids, he cheekily commented “No. We want to win.” He also stated “Winners are grinners!” Katie Archer also added that she was a bit nervous as there was a strong Goal Attack in the opposition team.

1st Quarter

With a blast from Mr Hillard’s whistle, the game commenced. Mrs Fisher scored the first goal, and from there on, the staff were on a roll.

After that, it was the students turn to shine. With a consistent ball flow down the court, the students went for a shot, but narrowly missed. On the next centre pass, the ball flew down the court before a heroic intercept by Katie. The kids clawed back, and it was clear the staff were having trouble keeping up. The students’ feisty throws were just too hard to intercept. To the staff’s relief, the quarter time siren sounded with staff in the lead 3-0.

2nd Quarter

In the second quarter, the ball flew straight down the northern end with the students getting the first goal. Their first goal for the game which helped lighten the mood. At the next centre pass, the staff’s great teamwork and experience paid off. The staff went for a goal, but just missed. Luck was on their side with a second try that was successful. Two more goals followed for the staff, before an amazing intercept by one of the students. The spectators watched as the ball travelled down the court for one of the most needed goals of the game for the students. The crowd cheered, which clearly gave the students a confidence boost. Now the students were in with a chance, with the score 7-2.

3rd Quarter

In the third quarter there was a lot of the ball going back and forth, back and forth, before things started to get interesting with a great intercept from Mr.C. He threw the ball to Mrs Marshall who was in the shooting position. At the next centre pass, once again the ball heads straight down to the teachers’ end. The shooters attempted a goal, but just missed. They tried again, and second time lucky, they get it in. The third quarter siren went with teachers still in the lead 10-2.

Final Quarter

The excitement continued in the fourth quarter with 4 goals for staff and an additional goal for the students. It was a skillful final quarter filled with great intercepts and defence by both teams. The final score was 14 – 3, teachers way.
