Unley Primary School’s very first debating team has had a very successful season this year. Although we lost our first match to Parkside Primary School, we have improved and learnt from it greatly as our debates continued. We have worked very hard, training and rehearsing most lunchtimes across the week. On Thursdays, we would have after school practice from 3:20pm to 4:20pm when we would take turns bringing afternoon tea. We have won all other debates beating Glen Osmond Primary School, Pulteney Grammar School, St Dominic’s Priory College and East Adelaide school. We are now ranked 12th out of 103 primary school teams.

Across the season, each member of our team won the award as the ‘debater of the night’, which is an impressive whole team achievement.

Unfortunately we could not qualify for the quarter finals as you have to be in the top 8 teams but we are very proud of what we have achieved and think that this was an excellent season for us all. We finished 3 points behind the team that was in 8th place and 4 points behind the team in first place. We hope to make the finals next year as we have learnt a lot this season and we hope to build on this next year. Students who are in years 5 to 6 this year are welcome to try out for next year’s second team.

We would all like to thank Miss Alchin for her hard and continuous work as our coach. We would also like to thank Miss Butler for helping and coming to all our debates, Miss Lindon for helping with our practice and Miss McCurdie for editing our work and checking grammar.
