Congratulations to all of our 52 students who attended the District Athletics Championships at SANTOS Stadium on Monday 10thSeptember. It was a fantastic day with all our athletes competing extremely well across all events. As a result, our school came third in a field of 15 schools. Our athletes from Unley School are very grateful to the hard work, excellent training and advice given to them twice a week over the last 4 – 6 weeks by Oscar Asbanu (running coach) and Lucy Appleton (shot put coach). Thankyou also to Eric Jankevics for his class support allowing me to join trainings and for also being available to support discus and high jump training.  A big thankyou to Lucy Appleton for officiating the boy’s shot put and Jill Beaven for supporting her in this role all day. Oscar Asbanu was also committed all day again this year, managing all the runners for warm ups and being at the start of their events. Ben Cleggett (my co-class teacher) worked on the day to support our students in being at their events on time. Parents, coaches and teachers were very proud of the competitive and supportive behaviour of all students. It continues to be an absolute pleasure taking our athletes to District Day and observing their support for one another and level of commitment.

There were many wonderful highlights on the day and I would like to share a few. Four of our first-time athletes (10 years) came first given it was their first time competing at such a large event (Jack Davies, Ben Beaven, Evie Sangster and Joseph Hewson). Special mention needs to be given to Joseph Hewson for his outstanding 800 metre win as well as the 11 year old boys who took out 1st  Andile Ndlovu, 2nd Jack Appleton and 3rd Akash Nair in the 200 metre race.

Good luck to these students in the State Event. They are continuing to train very hard and I am confident that they will not only enjoy the experience but will be very successful in producing their personal best.

Although we have an impressive list of athletes mentioned above, I feel that it is important to add that a large number of our athletes achieved their personal best on the day without winning a ribbon.

I would like to thank all the parents who attended District Day to support all our athletes.
